What is MTSS |
MTSS - Physical Therapy Breakdown |
MTSS stands for Multi Tiered System of Support (MTSS). As the name implies, this framework has a tiered infrastructure that uses data to help match academic and social-emotional behavior assessment and instructional resources to each student’s needs. In this tiered, data-informed framework, educators work to ensure that the majority of students respond to core instruction. Students who need additional support for enrichment or remediation are identified by data and provided that support with the right focus and intensity. MTSS makes the district-wide system more effective and ensures we are supporting the needs of every student.

With the welcoming of another Physical Therapist, the Physical Therapy (PT) department is taking a more active role in MTSS by way of early detection, intervention, and prevention. The Physical Therapists are now pushing into each Kindergarten Physical Education (P.E.) class once a cycle; Mrs. Norman pushing in at Davis Elementary School and Mrs. Armstrong pushing in at Flanders & St. Joseph's Elementary Schools. Pushing into each Kindergarten P.E. class is enabling us to familiarize with the Kindergarten cohort (Class of 2036), collaborate with the P.E. experts across the district, identify concerns early on, and offer the appropriate level of support; while serving as an additional set of hands as these youngsters explore and develop new skills.

When teachers have student concerns, in regard to gross motor performance in the areas that are required to access the educational environment safely and effectively, they will reach out to the Physical Therapist managing their building via email, phone, or in person with the student’s name and their concerns. We will then put the student on our “PT Radar” to be monitored during Tier I intervention. Should they require additional support, they would then be provided with Tier II intervention and so forth [TIER I <----> TIER II <----> TIER III].
